About North East Surfing

North East Surfing is an independent guide to surfing the coast of North East England, from Berwick-upon-Tweed down to Skinningrove.

This coast doesn't get the headlines Cornwall does, but when a northerly groundswell lines up with a westerly wind it produces some of the best waves in the country, often with nobody out. It also asks more of you: water that drops to single figures in winter, rips around headlands and piers, reefs that are shallow at the wrong tide, and river mouths shared with shipping.

Every spot here lists the swell, wind and tide it prefers, the kind of surfer it suits, and the hazards to know about before you paddle out. It's a starting point, not a forecast. Look at the water, talk to people on the beach, and if in doubt, don't go out.

North East Surfing is independently curated. It isn't affiliated with any forecasting service, council, lifeguard organisation or surf school. Corrections and local knowledge are always welcome.
