NNorth East Surfing

Black Middens

Surf Spot

Description

A left-hand reef inside the mouth of the Tyne that only breaks when a big easterly swell pushes between the piers. On those rare days it can be one of the best waves on the east coast, but it shares water with ships, river currents and whatever the Tyne is carrying. Strictly for experienced locals. For everyone else it's a spectacular spot to watch from shore. The rocks gave their name to one of the Tyne's deadliest shipwreck sites: five ships were lost here in storms in 1864, prompting the founding of the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade that same year.
