Hartlepool's old town sits on a rocky headland that catches north-easterly swell, with reef and beach breaks along its edges. It's inconsistent, but the tide doesn't matter much and a north-westerly wind that ruins spots further north can be offshore here. Steetley Pier, a short way north, is another option on the right day.
