Probably the most famous wave in the North East, and one of the rarest. A fast, barrelling right unloads along the west side of the South Gare breakwater, a mass of blast-furnace slag and concrete laid down in the late 1800s at the mouth of the Tees. It needs an easterly or south-easterly swell that seldom arrives, and when it does it's heavy, shallow and firmly the domain of experienced locals. Worth the trip to watch, with the steelworks and the lighthouse as backdrop.
Expert spot. Shallow, heavy or hard to get in and out of — don't learn here.
